What's Going On at Bandai's Gen Con Booth?

Given their stature in the TCG industry, Bandai's presence at Gen Con 2026 feels rather reserved. This is the publisher behind four of the Top 10 TCGs in North America, one of which is currently vying for Top 3 status, but compared to the massive displays for up-and-coming TCGs like Rush of Ikorr, their exhibits this year look pretty modest: one play area, barely big enough for all their events, and one booth somewhat bigger than the minimum footprint.

Naturally, they've both been packed all weekend.

Bandai's Play Area

In a small alley leading behind the check-in table for Bandai events in Hall B, Bandai set up modest-sized glass displays full of chase cards from current and upcoming sets from their growing stable of games.

OP-17

Every time I walked by, I saw a gaggle of players admiring the alt-arts from the next One Piece Set, The World's Greatest Warriors (OP-17). Bandai's employees had a hard time keeping the little walkway clear.

Besides the (mostly sold out) events and the cards on display, the main draw to the booth is the opportunity to buy sealed products at retail price.

The Retail Menu

For comparison, these are the market prices for each of these items on TCGplayer.

As I approached the table on Thursday morning, my pulse quickened when I realized that, with my Exhibitor badge, I might get to be first in line for these deeply discounted deals. My mind reeled at the thought of buying one of the new Starter Decks for its MSRP of $11.99.

Luckily for the cosmic laws of fairness, I never got a chance to abuse my Exhibitor privilege. I was already too late. In order to buy anything from the booth on Thursday, I had to have reserved a spot earlier in the week. By the time I saw what was on available, it was already sold out for the day. Another disappointed fan showed me the Save My Spot feature in the Gen Con app, where we'd all need to press a button at 10pm in order to reserve the right to shop from Bandai tomorrow. They shrugged in resignation, and admitted the situation was "better than last year."

Bandai's Naruto Booth

In the exhibit hall, Bandai kept their presence minimal. No booths at all for One Piece, Gundam, Union Arena, or any of their other TCGs—much less their overwhelming catalog of toys. Instead, there was simply a small square booth, built to an imposing height, advertising the upcoming Naruto Card Game.

At the booth, fans could admire glass displays holding the cards that had just been revealed. The person next to me remarked unprompted that the cards were absolutely gorgeous, with the pleasant banality of a passerby remarking on the weather.

The sky is blue, the sea is wet, and Bandai makes beautiful trading cards.

Outside the booth, we also got our first look at the rules for the game.

Naruto Rules

As far as activations, fans could follow the game on social media or Bandai's TCG+ app for a free sticker and a tote bag with straps to be worn as a backpack. A fan I'd met while clumped around the OP-17 display had shown me theirs:

By the time I arrived at the booth, two hours after they'd opened, I had seen these backpacks all over the place, and they were already sold out for the day. But I signed up for notifications on TCG+, got my sticker, and counted myself lucky that I'd already secured a spot in one of the Naruto demos later that would let me pick up a promo.

The Ticket

We did it, fam.

If business is a game of minimizing costs and maximizing revenue, Bandai is winning. Their TCG machine is so perfected at this point that they can dominate the conversation at a convention the size of Gen Con just by announcing a new game, displaying their cards, and offering to sell their regular catalog of products at retail price.
