The One Piece TCG Rarity System, Explained

The One Piece TCG Rarity System, Explained

Alright, dear reader. It's time for me to be honest with you. I have a crippling fixation on cracking booster packs.

Is that the definition of a first-world problem? Absolutely. Would it be cheaper for me to buy the singles I want instead? Undoubtedly. Does that stop every booster pack from talking to me like the Green Goblin mask in Spider-Man: No Way Home? No. No, it does not.

For better or worse, booster packs tap directly into the allure of the unknown. They're Schrodinger's Chase Rare, both the most expensive card in the set and a pile of duplicated bulk right up until the moment you open it. That creates an adrenaline kick you just can't replicate anywhere else…

…or at least, it should.

That wave of surprise can't hit you if you don't know what you're looking at. Sure, that's a cool shiny card, but without context as to how rare and exclusive it is, how am I supposed to become the appropriate amount of excited? This has been a personal pain point when it comes to Japanese card games because, as much as I love them, they have SO MANY RARITIES.

"GUYS LOOK, I OPENED AN ALT ART!"
"Actually, that's a V.1 Secret Rare Alternative Art. It's slightly different"

Miserable.

Fear not, as my pain is your payoff. I'm breaking down every rarity you can find in the One Piece Trading Card Game, including how to spot them, how hard they are to find, and which of them tend to be the most valuable. I'll also probably nerd out a bit about how cool some of them look as we go—you're going to have to live with that.

If you're the type to double-check what you've opened, One Piece TCG has you covered. Every card has a rarity symbol in the bottom right corner next to the set code that you can confirm against the chart below:

  • C: Common
  • UC: Uncommon
  • R: Rare
  • L: Leader
  • SR: Super Rare
  • SEC: Secret Rare

These rarities are ranked from most common to most exclusive. There are also promo cards and DON!! cards, which don't fit into this hierarchy.

  • P: Promo
  • (No Symbol): DON!!

While rarity works as a starting point, most of the One Piece Card Game's collectability comes from a variety of highly coveted alternate-art variants. Let's take a closer look at some of these with examples:

The bread and butter of One Piece TCG. Common cards are the easiest to find, and you'll tend to find them by the handful in every booster pack you open. It's a rarity reserved for the building blocks of the game and forms the foundation of most decks you'll build.

However, commons that are likely to see high amounts of play or feature fan-favorite characters can receive alternate art treatments that extend out past the border. These are commonly referred to as "Parallel Rares" on the wider market. You'll often find these as Box Toppers, but you'll also find one-to-three of them per booster box where applicable. Since Kingdoms of Intrigue (OP-04), they've had a small star above their rarity symbol to make them slightly easier to spot. These alt-arts are definitely worth pulling to one side, as some can be worth more than most rares!

Uncommon has always been a bit of an awkward rarity. It feels slightly shoehorned to separate slightly better cards turning up as often in Sealed Deck with no real material gain outside of that. You'll find uncommon cards in every One Piece TCG pack you open.

Much like commons, they'll occasionally pop up with alternate art and a little star for collectors and players looking for a little flair. This is a massive win in my opinion; I love the idea of a fully alt art deck—it's such a flex!

Rare cards will always carry a foil treatment, so they're much easier to spot upon first blush than their lower rarity counterparts. You're guaranteed at least one rare card per pack, but you may get a second if you're not fortunate enough to open something more lucrative.

However, rare cards are where we'll start to see the more explosive multipliers on alternate art cards. Cards like Nami (OP01-016) are both iconic and incurs a slight tax based on desirability, causing their Parallel Rare variants to skyrocket in price and demand. Base rarity? Just two bucks. Paralell? Around $190.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these as you rip through your booster box!

Leader is a rarity reserved for denoting One Piece's central Leader cards, and you'll tend to find one in every two packs, there or thereabouts. They're necessary to play any particular deck but not massively scarce, so their price point will often depend on how competitively viable any given leader is right now.

That said, alternate art Leader cards are some of the most coveted collectibles in the entire game. They feature a variety of different art styles that are often personally tailored to the character in question, serving as the ultimate endorsement of your dedication to a deck. As a result, heavy hitters like Nami (OP03-040) can run as high as $200 for a copy and are always in high demand.

Appearing only one in four packs or so, Super Rares tend to mark the line where cards begin to hold significant value. These cards are typically very powerful and heavily played across the metagame, meaning there's always someone who is looking to snap them up. Base rarity versions of highly played cards can demand as high as $50 per copy but don't hold a candle to their alternate treatment counterparts.

As of Kingdoms of Intrigue (OP04), certain Super Rares also received the Manga Rare treatment alongside the typical alternate artwork, creating a hierarchy of rarities applicable to any type of player. I'm glad to have invested in some Alternate Art Sabo (OP04-083) to make my deck look beautiful, but they'll never generate the same amount of surprise and envy as the $500 Manga copies when I slam them on the table.

The haymaker base rarity. Secret Rares in One Piece TCG are the chase item for those uninterested in flash extras, and you'll find roughly one per box as you crack through pack after pack. While these cards are the most likely to hold long-term value, they'll ebb and flow heavily depending on the popularity of the card.

Much like Super Rare cards, Secret Rare characters carry a variety of treatments that help to accommodate every budget. These are commonly referred to as V.1 (The base rarity) V.2 (Alternate Art), and V.3 (Manga Art). A single base copy of Sogeking (OP03-122) will cost you five bucks, and you can treat yourself to an alternate art for around fifteen dollars…or you can secure yourself one of the scarcest cards on the market for $400-$700. It's entirely up to you!

Card Variants in the One Piece Card Game

As we've seen, cards of any rarity can have special versions with alternate art that are far more valuable than their normal versions. Here are a few of the most common card variants, and how to identify them.

Also called parallel rares, this catch-all term can apply to any alternate version of a card, but is usually reserved for cards that aren't known by one of the other variants below. As mentioned above, since Kingdoms of Intrigue (OP-04), they've had a small star above their rarity symbol to make them slightly easier to spot.

  • Identifying Mark: SP symbol to the left of the set code.

Often abbreviated to "SP", Special Rare cards are alternate-art cards that are related to other SP cards from the same set, usually by their artwork. Often they're reprints of cards from earlier sets (which may already have alternate-art versions in those earlier sets).

Special Rare cards were introduced in Pillars of Strength (OP-03), which offered a Wanted Poster frame on several starter deck cards like Monkey D. Luffy (Wanted Poster OP03 - ST01-012) and evolved into the jaw-dropping portrait pieces of Kingdoms of Intrigue (OP-04) and gorgeous stained glass effects of Awakening of the New Era (OP-05).

Each set has a new treatment style, so it may take a moment for you to realize what you've opened. Either way, these cards command hundreds of dollars and should be seen as an exceptional hit!

  • Identifying Mark: Background composed of frames from the One Piece manga.

Also known as "super alternate-art cards." Manga Rare cards are also counted as Special Rare cards. Initially, there was only one of these available per set, but that status quo has been upended by the three brothers in Awakening of the New Era (OP-05) and the mass reprints in -Premium Booster- (PRB-01). There's also the "Golden Manga Rare" Gol. D. Roger in Emperor of the New World (OP-09), which is very difficult to acquire. Pull rates on these cards aren't public, but various sources cite the odds between 1-500 and 1-1500 packs depending on the set—that's a whole lotta cardboard!

Much like Special Rare cards, Treasure Rare cards are typically reprints of older cards with new art in new sets. So far, each One Piece set has only had one Treasure Rare at most—for example, Vinsmoke Sanji is the only Treasure Rare in -Legacy of the Master- (OP-12), and -Carrying On His Will- (OP-13) doesn't have any Treasure Rare cards.

Most Event cards in the One Piece Card Game feature art taken directly from the manga. But some alternate-art Events have full-card artwork and foiling that's reminiscent of Manga Rare cards, which has led the community to dub them "Manga Events" or "Manga Rare Events."

  • Identifying Mark: Solid gold border.

Last and by no means least, solid gold DON!!! cards joined the game in -Premium Booster- (PRB-001). These are highly collectible premium versions of the regular DON!!! cards used to facilitate gameplan and have proven to be a smash hit with collectors and players alike. They're heavily themed around a particular leader and incredibly difficult to open - you only open one DON!!! card per display of -Premium Booster- (PRB-001) with a small chance of that card being golden.

My favorite piece? The beautiful Sabo-inspired DON!!! complete with iconic hat. These have been selling for roughly $70 a piece as of late, with anyone hoping to prove their dedication to a leader requiring 10 for a full set. I only expect these to increase in price as more time passes since they hit the market and I'd be overjoyed to open a few more myself.
