How to Build a Zoro Deck in One Piece TCG

How to Build a Zoro Deck in One Piece TCG

So, you want to become the world's strongest swordsman? This sounds like a noble endeavor! Just don't get lost along the way, alright?

Without Roronoa Zoro, there is simply no One Piece. As the second-in-command of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, Zoro carries a level of infamy that petrifies his opponents and sports a gigantic bounty to match. Tall, muscular, and a righteous head of hair? There's plenty to like about the master of Three Sword Style.

Thankfully, that charm has carried over into the trading card game, too. Much like his anime counterpart, Zoro was introduced in Romance Dawn and has stayed the course ever since. As one of the first Leader cards, he has long been a formative part of the new player experience, and fans are overjoyed to see his iconic scarred face gracing more cards with each passing set. My personal favorite? Roronoa Zoro (OP06-118). I do not want to mess with that guy. No, thank you.

If you're into swinging swords and smushing your opponents in One Piece TCG, Zoro may be the leader for you. Let's take a closer look at how you'd go about building him:

[DON!! x1] [Your Turn] All of your Characters gain +1000 power.

Marketplace price trend

You've got two choices when building Roronoa Zoro: He can stand alone as Roronoa Zoro (OP01-001) or tag-team with his crewmate in Roronoa Zoro & Sanji (ST12-001). If you've got a preference for camaraderie, I'd lean towards the latter. If you enjoy quickly and mercilessly putting your opponent to the floor, look no further than the original.

Fundamentally, Zoro is quite simple to understand. Suit him up with a DON!!! card, and suddenly, all your characters are huge. He's also sporting five life, allowing him to take some early hits and prioritize his own game plan. That's the perfect combination for an aggressively slanted leader who looks to close the game before the opponent has a moment to breathe.

Par2Singular's Red Zoro - 71st Place at Championship Finals Utrecht:
Leader

Event (6)

The above list is just one of a handful that have found tournament success over the last few months, which goes to show that Zoro can still hang with the best almost two years after his release.

The deck excels at dumping multiple characters into play on the same turn, ignoring opposing characters, and going straight for the jugular. Tony Tony. Chopper (OP04-010) and Tony Tony. Chopper (OP08-007) headline the {Animal} synergies, sneaking the likes of Robson (OP08-013), Hiking Bear (OP08-010), and Super Spot-Billed Duck Troops into play at no extra cost. All of a sudden, your board has snowballed out of control, and the opponent cannot keep up with all the extra stats that Zoro himself provides.

The next step is some additional consistency. Just Shut Up and Come With Us!!!! (EB01-009) and Nami (OP01-016)) both dig through the top cards of your deck to find the most appropriate {Animal} or {Straw Hat Crew} character. These include important Rush characters like Roronoa Zoro (OP01-025) and Robson (OP08-013)), who threatens to hit the opponent much more difficult than they could have predicted or clear the way for your more impactful characters to score a much-needed hit.

Speaking of clearing the way, characters like Nico Robin (OP05-010) and Silvers Rayleigh (OP08-118) serve one primary purpose for Zoro: eating opposing blockers. The best way any opponent can interact is by slowing you down long enough to profitably trade for your characters, and blockers are far-and-away the best way to do that. Throw in a few copies of Diable Jambe (ST01-016), and you've got more than a handful of ways to bust down a wall.

Altogether, this deck is powerful and flavorful. I've always loved the fact that most Straw Hat leaders allow you to play with other members of the crew at the same time, and Zoro does so in a fun and intuitive way. Besides, what's more fun than just slapping your opponent?

I may have found something more fun than slapping your opponent.

Roronoa Zoro & Sanji (ST12-001) don't quite carry the same pedigree as the previous incarnation, but it does have the distinct honor of being the first dual-color leader. Releasing back in Starter Deck 12, this leader was designed with an eye to Wings of the Captain (OP06). where it would receive dedicated support to help bolster its power level.

Roronoa Zoro and Sanji isn't quite as intuitive as other starter deck leaders, carefully balancing the tempo loss from picking up your own characters with additional attacks from some of your strongest ones. That means you'll need a fine mixture of powerful targets to keep swinging with and cheap characters you can replay for value. It's an interesting puzzle to solve and provides a ton of complex decision points.

HowlingMines's Roronoa Zoro and Sanji

My preferred way to build the deck involves several of the Seven Warlord of the Sea synergies that have found success in Donquixote Doflamingo (OP09-031) at the tournament tables. Buckin (OP07-049) and Jinbe (OP07-045) are two particularly monstrous targets for your leader ability, offering the ability to vomit additional characters into play at lightning speed and then be rebought to do so all over again. The likes of Gecko Moria (ST03-004) and Edward Weevil (EB01-023) help to keep your hand stocked up with warlord characters, provide impressive stats, and are reasonable targets for Roronoa Zoro & Sanji (ST12-001) themselves.

You've also got a few fancier options to rebuy as the game goes long. Charlotte Pudding (OP06-047) can repeatedly spoil attempts to generate card advantage and can be absolutely backbreaking against leaders like Nami (OP03-040), who rely on a large hand of counters to stay in the game. Hody Jones (OP06-035) is another cute option, capable of smashing through opposing blockers or DON!!! over and over again and packing a sizeable body to boot!

At the top end, there are a few premium options to re-stand with your leader ability. Dracule Mihawk (ST03-005) will happily sneak into play courtesy of Jinbe, then filter through all the junk you've drawn for more powerful cards, and Donquixote Doflamingo (OP09-031)) will ready themselves for a third time once all the damage is done to provide a massive blocker. Together, these cards give you incredible flexibility — and that decision-dense, skill-rewarding gameplay loop is very appealing to players looking for a challenge.

Roronoa Zoro is one of the most iconic characters in anime, so I can't blame you for wanting to charge into battle at their side. Thankfully, both available leaders over a variety of different play experiences that should keep you entertained for many a boss battle to come.
