It's a little strange, really. Nami is probably the second most popular character across the entire One Piece franchise, but unlike Monkey. D. Luffy and other members of the Straw Hat Crew, she's got exactly one option to play if you'd like her to helm the assault. Thankfully, it's a darn good one — Nami (OP03-040) has managed to perform incredibly well at top-ranking tournaments during several formats since her release, and no doubt offers a unique play experience at your kitchen table if that's what you're hoping to find. Even better, the whole deck will set you back roughly fifty bucks. How cool is that?

Shall we take a closer look at the type of cards you'll need to navigate your way to victory?

Dennis Weiss's Nami (OP03-040) - 3rd Place at noHEROES Online Treasure Cup

Leader:

Characters: (18)

Events: (32)

Nami is a leader with an alternative win condition; you're not looking to reduce the opposing life to zero, you're looking to reduce our own deck to zero instead. Once you do, you'll immediately win the game, thanks to Nami's passive ability. That's why the deck is stuffed with ways to draw additional cards and dump the top card directly into the trash — after all, the faster you churn through the deck, the quicker you'll score a victory!

Sometimes, you'll even win the game on the opposing turn! Thanks to powerful trigger events like Sanji's Pilaf (OP03-056) and Impel Down All Stars (OP02-066), you can draw those final few cards as the opponent is desperately trying to finish you off. If these triggers get gummed up in your hand, you can use an Apis (OP04-041) or Gum-Gum Giant Gavel (OP03-055) to trash them for something better instead.

Throughout the early game, you'll be looking to take a few hits from the opponent to build up a flush hand of counters. From there, you can strategically use those counters to buy yourself time and protect your remaining triggers in life until they're more impactful. As you continue to draw and mill cards, you'll likely gain perfect information about which cards must be somewhere in your life cards and that'll inform how you navigate those important final turns.

Kaya (OP03-044) is probably the most powerful card in your deck, and will usually be the target you're actively looking for with Apis (OP04-041). She'll remove two cards from the top of your deck for just one DON!!! or sit snuggly in your hand as a +2000 counter. She's also the perfect target for the trigger effect of Snake Dance (OP07-055) (or even your own Gum-Gum Giant Gavel!) if you really need to get through those final few cards.

The last major factor to consider as you play is when to focus on controlling the board instead of going as fast as you can. Opponents like Donquixote Doflamingo (OP01-060) aren't going to give you the breathing room to draw cards over and over, so you'll need to strategically use your copies of Boa Sandersonia (OP07-050) and Snake Dance (OP07-055) triggers to nickel and dime their cheaper threats over and over again. That should buy you enough time to get the engine rolling!

Other Considerations for Building Nami in One Piece TCG

There are a few cards that regularly work their way in and out of Nami decklists that don't quite cut the above version — they're well worth knowing about, however. The metagame is constantly shifting and who knows what your friends may bring along to your next game night. It pays to be prepared with interesting tech choices!

[When Attacking] Look at 5 cards from the top of your deck; reveal up to 1 blue Event and add it to your hand. Then, place the rest at the bottom of your deck in any order.

Nami (OP09-050) has been a massive overperformer for me since she was recently released in Emperors in the New World, but she's yet to find success on a bigger stage. This one-cost character presents a pesky repeatable draw engine for all your powerful blue events and lets you carefully manipulate the order of the final cards you'll see. I'm personally playing them in the slots taken up by Gloriosa (Grandma Nyon) (OP07-041) and Hanger (OP04-050), but they're certainly not mandatory. It just feels kinda right to have more Nami in the Nami deck.

Cavendish (OP10-040) isn't an option we've been allowed to explore yet here in the west — she's releasing in Royal Blood in March — but she's been doing some heavy lifting for Nami pilots in the APAC region. Cavendish has a surprisingly sturdy stat line that you'll be overjoyed to see opponents sending their attacks into and will threaten to hyper-accelerate your game plan if left unchecked. I'll be sure to pick up a few copies after she releases!

Finally, you could explore using the robust package of Impel Down units over their Amazon Lily/Kuja Pirates counterparts. Mr.1 (Daz Bonez) (OP02-063) threatens to pick up your most events to use all over again, and you score some additional tempo triggers in Gum-Gum Rain (OP02-068) and DEATH WINK (OP02-069). You'll even get Buggy (OP02-058) to help dig them all out of your deck! Truthfully, I feel like Nami (OP09-050) helps to fill the role that Mr.1 (Daz Bones) used to play, but it's nice to have the option to double down if it feels right.

Tips and Tricks for Playing Nami in One Piece TCG

  • As much as that free card mill is tempting, I'd avoid swinging Nami at the opposing leader until much later on. Leaving your opponent stranded on card advantage with an irrelevantly high life total is one of Nami's biggest strengths, so try to use her to clear away pesky characters instead.
  • There's no harm in burning some cards that appear to be blank in the matchup if it gets your hand low enough to activate Love-Love Mellow (ST03-017). In a deck like Nami, every card drawn counts.
  • Carefully track the cards you're milling! You're going to see your entire deck throughout the game, so counting out copies of each card to get perfect information about what's left in deck/life is really powerful.
  • Consider leaving open some DON!!! when you don't have access to Gum-Gum Giant Gavel or Love-Love Mellow. The fact that they could be there will often influence how the opponent plays. That may buy you additional time or the ability to bluff them again in a later turn!
  • Sometimes, you need to decline a Trigger effect. Sure, free value from Gum-Gum Giant Gavel is cool and all, but you should consider if removing two cards from your deck and gaining +4000 is more impactful than bouncing back a character. These decisions take practice, and you'll get better at spotting them as you play additional games!
