How to Build a Trafalgar D. Law Deck in One Piece Card Game

Ahem... ROOM!

Sorry, I had to.

It may be a slightly unusual choice, but Trafalgar Law is my favorite character in all of One Piece. There's just an undeniable charm around the Surgeon of Death — a unique perspective granted exclusively to the only survivor of amber lead syndrome. Law is a calm soul driven by an unwavering personal code and the most sarcastically merciful enemy you could ever meet in battle. He has grown from the sole survivor of Flevance into one of the most feared pirates of the modern era, and that story arc really resonates with me.

In contrast, Trafalgar Law has had a chaotic and tumultuous journey in the One Piece Card Game. Introduced originally in Romance Dawn (OP-01), Law has been shaking up tournament tables since the beginning of the game, but it would be his headlining leader card in Trafalgar Law (ST10-001) that ultimately proved to be too powerful for tournament play.

Thankfully, there are still a couple of unique ways to charge into battle alongside the captain of the Heart Pirates — and two dedicated leader cards that can help you do it.

Let's look at the ways you can build a deck around the infamous Trafalgar D. Water Law.

Red Green Law is one of the oldest and most refined leaders in the One Piece Card Game (and incredibly thematic to boot!). You'll spend the early stages establishing a board of five cheap characters, most of which search for additional characters in the process. Once you've done so, you can start to use Law's leader ability to shamble in five-cost characters of the opposite color turn after turn for explosive sequences stuffed with searches and interaction.

When you put it all together, you have a leader capable of aggressive starts and strategic outplays against your opponents.

The concept of the deck is simple enough; Jewelry Bonney (ST02-007), Nami (OP01-016), and Curly.Dadan (OP02-005) are all dedicated search characters who will keep your hand topped up and find your best threats as you begin to fill the board. Once you've done so, you'll start using your leader ability to cheat in Cavendish (EB01-012), Trafalgar Law (OP01-047) and Trafalgar Law (OP01-002) while picking up those same searcher characters to use all over again.

This potent engine helps to build a board of well-statted characters, but it also keeps your hand stocked with counters for the opposing crackback. Options like Otama (OP01-006), Nico Robin (OP05-010), and Sanji (OP01-013) can all be found by one or more of your searcher characters and provide suitable defenses as the game goes on. Even better, you can use these characters to fill the board early and then tag them out with Law to use as a counter!

Red Green Law is one of the few holdouts from the early era still finding success at the tournament tables. It's also incredibly fun to play and rewarding to navigate. There's just something cool about actively feeling like you're using Law's Shambles in each game you play.

Thankfully, that feeling isn't lost if you prefer the latest incarnation of the good doctor. Trafalgar Law (OP10-022) offers a side grade of his original self, requiring a total character cost of five (or more) to pull a character back into your hand. In exchange, you may look at the top card of your life cards for a {Supernovas} that costs five or less and then play it.

Tapping into your life cards for card advantage is incredibly powerful but equally dangerous — and this version of Law needs a much heavier focus on {Supernovas} to make the deck function. If you want to trade off your health in favor of an aggressive game plan — what exactly does that look like?

HowlingMines's Green Yellow Law

Green Yellow Law can create similarly fast starts to his predecessor but offers significantly more potential to grind out games with gigantic {Supernovas} and life card manipulation. By using Capone"Gang"Bege (OP10-120), Jewelry Bonney (ST02-007) and Trafalgar Law (OP10-119) to strategically replace the top card of your life with a five-cost Supernova, you can remove the luck element of your flips and snowball out of control. One of the most underrated aspects of Trafalgar Law (OP10-022) is the ability to return powerful, more expensive on-plays like Jewelry Bonney (OP07-026) to your hand with his ability and slide them back into your life cards from your hand to create potent resource loops.

However, you'll primarily pick up some value-based cheap characters in most games. Jewelry Bonney (ST02-007) and Monkey.D.Luffy (OP10-111) act as your searchers this time around, while Carmel (OP04-101) looks to generate card advantage the old fashion way instead. Together, they'll keep your hand flush and allow your life manipulators to slot the most important character back on top.
Being so heavily themed around {Supernovas} also comes with some additional perks. This deck does a phenomenal job at searching for silver bullets like Eustass"Captain"Kid (OP01-051), a notoriously big speed bump for non-red aggressive strategies, or Cavendish (EB01-012), one of the most impactful green cards in recent memory. Being able to consistently find (and replay) these powerful tools allows you to safely build around them, creating heavily favorable matchups as a result.

Green Yellow Law is still being refined as the community gets better at piloting it, and will no doubt continue to gain support as additional sets release. There's a lot of appeal to investing in a leader who will always be one of the better shells for any given {Supernova}, and I hope you're excited to go on that journey as well!

Trafalgar Law is a badass. Unsurprisingly, people enjoy playing games as badass characters. If you're looking for a One Piece deck that has competitive potential and feels thematically tied to the namesake character, there are few better fits than Law. May you abuse the Ope Ope no Mi for many years to come!
